Product Overview

We have put together this Shiitake mushroom log growing kit to ensure that you have everything you need to successfully select, prepare and inoculate hardwood logs in order to begin or expand your urban farm. All you need to add is a mallet, drill and hardwood log.

This kit is designed to inoculate a hardwood log of 50cm in length. However, the parts to the kit can be used multiple times creating fantastic value.

Shiitake mushrooms are prized for their high quality and velvety caps. They are dark brown with a velvety texture and earthy flavour. Caps range in size from 5-10cm.

We want to ensure you have experience of the entire farming process, which is why our kits aren’t simple ’open and spray’ sets. Instead, as well as skeleton instructions included in the kit, we have created an in-depth growth guide available to download which will take you through each step of the growing process to educate and inspire our customers to get more involved in sustainable food production. We believe anyone can be an expert urban farmer with a little help from our kits.

Product Description

The best and most natural way to grow these mushrooms is on hardwood logs using mushroom dowels. This is a gradual (6-12 months for first harvest) and low intensity method that can see you harvesting shiitake mushrooms 4-6 times a year for up to 6 years. Traditionally, logs to be inoculated would be placed adjacent to ones that have already grown the mushrooms and the spores would infiltrate the new logs naturally. However, since the development of the mushroom farming industry over the last 100 years it is now possible to implant mycelium directly into the logs and get a “head start” on the traditional method.

  • The ideal growing conditions for the shiitake mushrooms are: 14-17 C
  • We recommend a storage temperature of no higher than 5 C
  • First harvest: Seasonally in Autumn or Spring
  • Strain: Lentinula edodes
