Mushroom Cultivation Supplies FAQs
What’s the process of mushroom cultivation?
To begin cultivating mushrooms, start with clean, pasteurised substrate mixed with mushroom spawn. Keep it warm and damp so the mycelium can colonise. Then, once you see white mycelial growth, move it to a cooler, humid spot with indirect light, and mist to encourage mushrooms to fruit.
What month is mushroom season in the UK?
In the UK, wild mushroom season peaks in autumn – typically from September through November – when damp weather and cooler temperatures bring fungi out in force.
What is the easiest mushroom to cultivate?
Oyster mushrooms are widely considered the easiest – fast-growing, flexible about substrates, and forgiving if conditions fluctuate a bit.
Which soil is best for mushroom cultivation?
Most mushrooms don’t grow in soil; they prefer organic substrates like straw, wood chips, sawdust, or compost. Choose based on the species. For example, wood lovers like shiitake or Lion's Mane do best on hardwood shavings or sawdust.
Can I reuse mushroom substrate?
You can reuse mushroom substrate, but expect to get less from it. After the first flush, the substrate still has some mycelium and nutrients, but yields drop the next time around. For best results, refresh with new spawn and substrate every two or three flushes.
Which season is best for mushroom cultivation?
While mushrooms can be grown year-round indoors, autumn (September–November) naturally suits outdoor and foraging setups best. Indoors, temperature and humidity control give you flexibility any time of the year.
