Step-by-Step Guide: How To Grow Lion’s Mane Mushrooms

Growing Lion’s Mane mushrooms with Urban Farm-It couldn’t be easier. Even if you’re a total beginner, this Lion’s Mane mushroom growing kit helps make it happen, just follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Open & Prepare

Remove your Lion’s Mane mushroom growing kit from the box within 10 days of delivery (remember, it’s a live kit!). Using a clean knife or scissors, cut a large slit and a small cross in the bag, as shown in the instruction booklet.

Step 2: Set Up Your Humidity Tent

Assemble the humidity bag and prop it up using the skewers, making sure it doesn’t touch the block itself. This helps create the ideal moist environment that Lion’s Mane loves.

Step 3: Mist Daily

Use the spray bottle and clean tap water to mist the inside of the humidity tent twice a day. Keep it damp, but not soggy, too much moisture will slow down growth.

Step 4: Watch Your Lion’s Mane Grow

After a week or two of daily misting, your Lion’s Mane will begin to form soft, white tufts that grow fluffier each day. Just keep misting and avoid touching them while they develop to reduce the risk of contamination.

Step 5: Harvest & Enjoy

Once your Lion’s Mane mushroom is large, white, and shaggy, it’s time to harvest. Simply twist at the base of the mushroom to remove it from the growing block. Most kits should produce 2–3 flushes, when in the optimum environment. Just keep misting every day after your first harvest and wait for your next crop to appear.

What should I avoid when growing Lion’s Mane?

When growing Lion’s Mane from a grow kit, be sure to avoid:

  • Overwatering: Misting the substrate block twice daily is enough.
  • Low humidity: If the air is too dry, your mushrooms may grow more slowly
  • Poor ventilation: Without good airflow, excess CO₂ will damage your mushrooms
  • Contamination: This can introduce harmful bacteria from unclean tools or surfaces
How do I harvest and cook Lion’s Mane mushrooms from the growing kit?

To harvest Lion’s Mane mushrooms from your growing kit, wait until the mushrooms are full, white, and their clusters are visibly elongated – this is usually around 10-14 days after first misting. Then, simply twist the mushroom off cleanly at the base. Cook your Lion’s Mane the same day for maximum flavour. Its meaty texture makes it great for searing in a pan or shredding for ‘pulled’ dishes.

Are Lion’s Mane mushroom growing kits suitable for small spaces or apartments?

Yes, our Lion’s Mane mushroom growing kits are perfect for compact spaces like flats, studios, or shared houses. All you need is a well-ventilated shelf, countertop, or windowsill with room around the kit for airflow – no bigger than a shoebox.

What if my Lion’s Mane kit shows no growth after 15 days?

If your Lion’s Mane kit isn’t showing growth after 15 days, it may be due to low humidity, incorrect temperature, or poor airflow. Check:

  • Are you misting daily?
  • Is the kit within the ideal temperature range? (16–21°C)
  • Is there enough space for decent airflow around the kit?

Once you’ve checked all the above, continue misting daily for another week. You should start to see signs of growth during this time. Still no luck? Get in touch with the team, and we’ll do what we can to help.

How many harvests (flushes) can I get from one Lion’s Mane kit?

You should be able to get 2–3 flushes from your Lion’s Mane mushroom growing kit in the right conditions. Just leave the substrate block to rest for about a week after your first harvest, then continue with daily misting to encourage more growth.
